MY SEASON OF PROSPERITY

Text: 3 John 1:2

By Minister Femi Ade (Life in Abundance Ministries)

INTRODUCTION

Every human being was designed by God with a threefold nature—a divine operating system that mirrors God’s own nature. We are spirit, we have a soul, and we live in a body.
This aligns with my teaching, “The Divine Operating System: How God Wired Us to Function Like Him.”

  • The body is the biochemical and physical part.
  • The soul is the psychological realm—mind, emotions, and will.
  • The spirit is the God-conscious part designed for fellowship with Him.

In 3 John, the Apostle John writes a heartfelt letter to a man named Gaius, a faithful believer known for walking in truth and practicing hospitality.
He opens with a prophetic blessing:

“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.” —3 John 1:2

John connects three dimensions of prosperity that define a fulfilled life in Christ:

  1. Good health
  2. All-round wellbeing
  3. Soul prosperity

Your life can truly flourish when these three areas align with God’s will.

FLOURISHverb intransitive flur’ish. [Latin floresco, from floreo. The primary sense is to open, expand, enlarge, or to shoot out, as in glory, Latin ploro.]

1. To thrive; to grow luxuriantly; to increase and enlarge, as a healthy growing plant. The beech and the maple flourish best in a deep, rich and moist loam.

2. To be prosperous; to increase in wealth or honor.

Bad men as frequently prosper and flourish and that by the means of their wickedness. Psalm 34

When all the workers of iniquity do flourish Psalms 92:7.

3. To grow in grace and in good works; to abound in the consolations of religion.

The righteous shall flourish like the palmtree. Psalms 92:7.

4. To be in a prosperous state; to grow or be augmented.

MAJOR REVELATIONS FROM 3 JOHN 1:2

1. Prosperity flows through Prayer

Scriptures: Isaiah 3:10; 1 Thessalonians 5:17
John begins with prayer because prosperity starts in the spirit realm.
Prayer establishes alignment, opens doors, and activates God’s will for your wellbeing.

2. Enjoy Good Health

Scriptures: Proverbs 17:22; 1 Corinthians 6:19–20; Jeremiah 30:17; Proverbs 4:20–22
Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.
Good health is not secular—it is spiritual.
God wants you strong, vibrant, and whole.
Without physical health, you cannot fully pursue your destiny.

3. Wellbeing & Peace of Mind

Scriptures:  Isaiah 41:10, Phil 4:6-7
True prosperity includes emotional and mental stability.
Fear, anxiety, and pressure do not align with kingdom prosperity.

4. Prosperity of the Soul

Scriptures: Psalm 1:1–3; Proverbs 3:5–6; Jeremiah 17:7–8
Your soul is the engine room of your life—your mind, emotions, and will.
When the soul prospers, every other area begins to flourish. e.g innovations, ideas, solutions, contributions.

WHAT TRIGGERED JOHN’S PASSIONATE PRAYER FOR GAIUS?

Gaius Practiced Hospitality

“Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers and sisters—even though they are strangers.” —3 John 1:5

Gaius found his purpose.
He discovered his ministry.
He used his gifts.
He blessed the body of Christ.

Questions for reflection:

  • Have you found your kingdom assignment?
  • What gifts, skills, or experiences has God given you to bless humanity?
  • What are you doing that brings glory to Jesus?

WHY HOSPITALITY MATTERS TO GOD

The Bible provides several examples of individuals who showed hospitality to strangers and received significant blessings, which is a principle highlighted in Hebrews 13:2: “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so some people have entertained angels without knowing it”.

Hospitality is more than kindness—it is a kingdom system that unlocks divine encounters.

Hospitality opens the door for supernatural rewards.

Here are key biblical characters and the blessings they received:

  • Abraham and Sarah (Genesis 18:1-15)
    • Action: Abraham saw three strangers passing by his tent in the heat of the day and immediately ran to meet them. He bowed to the ground and urgently invited them to rest, wash their feet, and eat a substantial meal of bread, meat (a calf), and curds. He and Sarah served them eagerly and without hesitation.
    • Blessing Received: The visitors were revealed to be the Lord and two angels. As a reward for their generous hospitality, the Lord reaffirmed the promise that Sarah, who was old and barren, would conceive and bear a son (Isaac) within a year, a long-awaited miracle.
  • Lot (Genesis 19:1-26)
    • Action: When two angels arrived in Sodom, Lot, sitting at the city gate, insisted they stay at his home for the night to protect them from the wicked men of the city who surrounded the house. He prepared a meal for them and protected them at personal risk.
    • Blessing Received: Because of his righteous character and hospitality, the angels rescued Lot, his wife, and his two daughters from the divine destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.
  • The Widow of Zarephath (1 Kings 17:8-16)
    • Action: During a severe famine, the prophet Elijah asked a destitute widow for food. She was gathering sticks to make her last meal for herself and her son, after which they expected to die. Trusting in the word of the Lord delivered by Elijah, she selflessly used her last handful of flour and oil to feed the prophet first.
    • Blessing Received: As a direct result of her faith and hospitality, her jar of flour and jug of oil never ran dry for the duration of the famine, providing continuous miraculous provision for her household.
  • The Shunammite Woman (2 Kings 4:8-17)
    • Action: A wealthy woman in Shunem regularly persuaded the prophet Elisha to eat at her home when he passed by. Recognizing he was a holy man of God, she and her husband built and furnished a dedicated small room on their roof for him to use as a resting place whenever he was in town.
    • Blessing Received: As she had no child, Elisha promised her a son. The promise was fulfilled, and she miraculously gave birth to a son, who Elisha later raised from the dead when he died as a boy.
  • Rahab (Joshua 2:1-21)
    • Action: Rahab, a woman living in Jericho, sheltered two Israelite spies who came to scout the land. She hid them from the king’s men, risking her own life to protect strangers.
    • Blessing Received: She and her entire family were spared from destruction when the Israelite army captured the city of Jericho, and she became an ancestor of Jesus Christ.

THE MIND — THE BATTLEFIELD AND THE GATEWAY TO PROSPERITY

To understand soul prosperity, you must understand the mind.

To understand the mind, we need to first learn what the soul is:

the soul is often seen as the entire “living being,” composed of the mind, emotions, and will, which creates one’s personality.

The entirety of a person’s inner life and being, including their personality, consciousness, and identity. It is sometimes viewed as the bridge between the body and the spirit.

The mind is a component of the soul that specifically refers to the faculty of thought, reason, and intellect. While the terms overlap, the mind is the thinking part, and the soul is the whole inner person that has these thoughts, emotions, and a will.

The part of the soul where thought, reason, logic, and intellect reside. It is the faculty of thinking and the “battlefield” where beliefs are formed. (The heart governs emotions and intuition, the mind handles logic and cognition, and the soul represents the eternal essence and core identity of a person.)

The Importance and Role of the Mind

  • Seat of Understanding and Will: The mind (often interconnected with the “heart” in biblical language) is where understanding, reasoning, moral choices, and intentions originate.
  • Source of Actions: Scripture emphasizes that thoughts lead to actions and shape character. As a person “thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7), highlighting the direct link between inner thoughts and outward life.
  • Battleground for Spiritual Warfare: The mind is presented as a place where faith is either nurtured or resisted. Believers are called to actively engage in this spiritual battle by managing their thoughts [2 Corinthians 10:5].
  • Capacity for Love and Knowledge of God: A primary command is to love God with all one’s mind, indicating that intellectual engagement and understanding are essential aspects of devotion [Matthew 22:37

What does the Bible have to say about the Mind?

The Bible says the mind is crucial for one’s relationship with God, encompassing not just thoughts but one’s entire mental and moral state. It calls for believers to renew their minds to align with God’s will, guard their thoughts as everything flows from them, and to set their minds on spiritual, not worldly, things. The mind is also described as a battleground where believers are called to have the “mind of Christ” through the Holy Spirit.

Key biblical concepts about the mind

  • Renewal:

Believers are instructed to be “transformed by the renewing of your mind” to discern God’s will, which involves changing one’s way of thinking to be pleasing to God.

  • Guard your thoughts:

The Bible emphasizes guarding your heart and mind because the thoughts that originate there determine the outcomes of your life.

  • Spiritual vs. fleshly focus:

It is important to set your mind on the things of the Spirit, not the flesh, as a mind focused on the flesh is hostile to God.

  • The “mind of Christ”:

Believers are encouraged to have the mindset of Christ, which involves His perspective, humility, and purpose. This is possible through the Holy Spirit.

  • We have the mind of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit
  • Men need wisdom (to know all things) and its released by the anointing of the Holy One – Holy Spirit – 1 John 2 vs 20. This verse highlights that believers can understand God’s will because the Holy Spirit gives us the mind of Christ, enabling us to have God’s perspective and wisdom, not human wisdom.
  • Consequences of thoughts:

Scripture teaches that God searches the mind and heart, and what we think about can have eternal consequences. Thoughts are not private from God, and even thoughts can lead to actions.

  • Mental warfare:

The mind can be a place of conflict, where Satan can plant deceptive thoughts. The way to combat this is by renewing the mind with scripture and focusing on truth.

  • Love God with your mind:

Jesus commands people to love God with all their heart, soul, and mind, which includes using one’s thinking ability to love and know God.

Why do we need to prosper in our soul and be in health?

  1. Divine Will and Design: Gods desire is for our complete wellbeing
  2. God’s Purpose and Service: True prosperity is not for selfish gain, but to enable us to serve God effectively and be a blessing to others. Physical health and sufficient resources provide the strength and means to carry out God’s mission and ministry (1 Peter 4:10). To serve the purpose of God and His prophetic agenda for humanity – creation and world
  3. Effectiveness, Productivity, Enhance Creativity & Performance, Fervency in Prayer to fulfil purpose and destiny
  4. Experiencing God’s Peace: Spiritual prosperity, cultivated through prayer, scripture reading, and fellowship, leads to a deep sense of peace and contentment (Philippians 4:6-7), which provides stability even amidst life’s challenges.
